Austin O’Brien is an Associate Professor of Computer Science at Dakota State University in Madison, SD. Using technology and precision agriculture production methods to be more efficient and more profitable has been happening in various facets of agriculture for many years. While the use of artificial intelligence to assist with some of these tasks may be new to some farmers and ranchers, O’Brien says agriculture researchers have been using AI for over a decade.

Agriculture In-depth USDA Develops Programs Aiming to Assist Tribal Food Sovereignty Efforts

On June 5, 2024, U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced USDA is taking action to assist with efforts to strengthen Tribal food sovereignty. The programs include over $42 million for awardees under the Indigenous Animals Harvesting and Meat Processing Grant Program, $18 million for projects under the Tribal Forest Protection Act, and $2.3 million to support the service of Indigenous foods in school meal programs.
